The color white, mpembe, was the color of the Other World in Kongolese symbolism and spirituality, just as black was the color of This World. White was the color of the dead and of ancestors to the Kongolese. Ancestors were often thought of as dwelling in lakes, streams, oceans, or other large bodies of water, and hence were conceived as being on the “other side” of these bodies. The Kongolese regarded them as emissaries of the otherworld in line with the general practice of venerating albinos as incarnations of the water and earth spirits.
