In the days of the Kongo Kingdom legend circulated that the first Kongolese to see Europeans thought the Portuguese were riding on whales, and hence they gave them the name mundele, derived from the Kikongo word for whale, the only way they could describe their ships. It was their craft and not their skin color that marked them as different and this is why all Europeans were called by this name and not a variant of mpembe, which meant “white.”
